Backflow Prevention
What is Backflow?
- Typically, water flows from the public water supply to the consumer’s plumbing system. Backflow is the undesirable reversal of this flow of water, which can bring contaminating substances from the non-potable source to the potable source.
- One cross-connection can compromise the quality of water. Any bathtub, sink, washer, dishwasher, toilet or garden hose is a potential cross-connection.
Backflow Prevention Device
- A backflow device must be installed after the meter (see below for approved devices)
- All backflow devices are mechanical and will eventually fail. Testing is crucial to ensure the safety of the public water system. Each device should be tested annually.
- Colorado State regulations require your backflow devices be tested each year. A list of local certified backflow technicians is below.

All commercial and high hazard backflows must be tested and reported through BSI Online, which serves as the primary contact point for SWSD's commercial backflow program. All certified backflow technicians should contact BSI to learn how to submit test reports through their online portal.
