Backflow Prevention

What is Backflow?

  • Typically, water flows from the public water supply to the consumer’s plumbing system. Backflow is the undesirable reversal of this flow of water, which can bring contaminating substances from the non-potable source to the potable source.
  • One cross-connection can compromise the quality of water.   Any bathtub, sink, washer, dishwasher, toilet or garden hose is a potential cross-connection.

Backflow Prevention Device

  • A backflow device must be installed after the meter (see below for approved devices)
  • All backflow devices are mechanical and will eventually fail.  Testing is crucial to ensure the safety of the public water system.  Each device should be tested annually.
  • Colorado State regulations require your backflow devices be tested each year.  A list of local certified backflow technicians is below.
